In-effective Ventilation Systems
Opposing views argue that today's most advanced ventilation and air filtering systems cannot completely rid the air in smoking rooms or areas of SHS, therefore allowing SHS into the main building of the establishment and polluting the air even more then the in-effectiveity of the smoking ban. It is said that the majority of SHS can be eliminated, but not the smaller particles, which still pose a threat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, "Conventional air cleaning systems can remove large particles, but not the smaller particles or the gases found in secondhand smoke." (CDC), and goes on to add, "Current heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems alone do not control secondhand smoke exposure. In fact, these systems may distribute secondhand smoke throughout a building." (CDC). Once a faulty and in-effective ventilation system is installed, it may never to noticed that SHS is being spread through the main building and by the time people become aware, thousands of people could have inhaled SHS, and the eliminating the polluted air inside the main building will be very difficult.
Pro Smoking Ban
Others argue that the smoking ban is the only way to effectively eliminate SHS. The only alternative options are completely allowing smoking within public establishments (which is highly unreasonable), or to implement smoking areas or rooms. Because of the proof against ventilation systems, people agree that state wide smoking bans are the only way to completely eliminate SHS, therefore making the environment cleaner for everyone.
